Issue 25: Mastering Emotional Intelligence
-Maya Angelou
Welcome to our twenty-fifth edition!
As we head into July, and take on the second half of the year, mastering emotional intelligence is crucial for hitting your goals and keeping your priorities top of mind.
Emotional intelligence involves understanding and managing your own emotions and recognizing and working with vs against other people's emotions. I refer to this as staying "above the strategic line", meaning you're thinking and responding based on the result or outcome you want to create, vs reacting in fear or out of a hijacked ego. Here are three strategies to help you and your team stay above the line.
5-MINUTE STRATEGY
Staying Above The Strategic Line
Strategy 1: Practice Active Listening
Encourage your team to practice active listening during meetings and one-on-one interactions. This means fully concentrating on the speaker, understanding their message, responding thoughtfully, and withholding judgment. Model this behavior and create opportunities for team members to reflect on their listening skills. The objective here is to be able to understand and articulate someone else's perspective as well as they can, even when you don't agree.
Strategy 2: Develop Empathy
In team discussions, promote empathy by asking members to consider and discuss how their decisions and actions might impact others. Role-playing scenarios can also be effective in helping team members understand different perspectives.
Strategy 3: Implement Stress-Reduction Techniques
Introduce simple stress-reduction techniques such as deep breathing exercises or short mindfulness practices at the start of meetings. Reducing stress can help improve emotional regulation and create a more positive team dynamic. Quick tip: Err on the side of underestimating how long people can hold their breath. Nothing kills mindfulness like passing out!
Why this matters:
When you stay above the line you're making better decisions. This leads to better teamwork, communication, and conflict resolution. It fosters a supportive and understanding workplace where team members feel valued and motivated.
Next week's preview
Next week, we’ll explore the importance of developing self-compassion to avoid unfair self-judgment and criticism. Learn how this can improve your well-being and leadership effectiveness.
Until our next issue, practice these emotional intelligence strategies with your team and see the positive changes unfold.
Go out there and lead,
Asia
