Welcome to our 33rd issue! This week, we’re addressing a common mistake leaders make: avoiding difficult conversations. Whether it’s giving feedback, addressing performance issues, or navigating conflict, avoiding these conversations can lead to bigger problems down the road.

Here’s What It Looks Like:

  • Ignoring Performance Issues: You might hesitate to address underperformance because you want to avoid conflict or hurt feelings. However, this can lead to a decline in team productivity and morale as others see that poor performance is tolerated.

  • Avoiding Feedback: You might refrain from giving constructive feedback because you fear it will be taken personally or cause resentment. This can prevent your team members from growing and improving in their roles.

  • Sidestepping Conflict: You might avoid addressing conflicts within your team, hoping they’ll resolve on their own. This often leads to unresolved tensions that can undermine teamwork and collaboration.

What You Should Be Doing Instead:

  • First, prepare thoroughly before entering a difficult conversation. Understand the issue at hand, the desired outcome, and the potential emotions involved. This preparation allows you to approach the conversation with confidence and clarity.

  • Next, create a safe environment for the conversation by setting a tone of respect and collaboration. Use clear, specific language to address the issue and focus on finding solutions rather than placing blame. Follow up after the conversation to ensure that any agreed-upon actions are being implemented.
