Issue 23: The Power of Effective Delegation
-Alison Pincus
Welcome to our twenty-third edition!
As we continue through June, it's time to focus on effective delegation. Please don't underestimate the power of effective delegation. Delegating tasks not only empowers your team but also frees up your time for strategic thinking and leadership activities.
Here are three strategies to help you delegate more effectively:
5-MINUTE STRATEGY
Delegation for Empowerment
Strategy 1: Identify Delegable Tasks
Spend 1-2 minutes listing out your current tasks. Identify tasks that can be delegated to team members. Look for tasks that are repetitive, time-consuming, or could provide growth opportunities for others.
Strategy 2: Match Tasks to Team Members’ Strengths
Consider the strengths and development areas of your team members. Assign tasks based on their skills and areas they want to develop. Discuss with them how these tasks align with their career goals.
Strategy 3: Provide Clear Instructions and Expectations
When delegating a task, clearly communicate the expected outcomes, deadlines, and any necessary resources. Ensure that your team member understands what is required and feels comfortable asking questions.
BONUS: After the delegated task is complete, review the outcome and results with your team member and refine expectations for next time. This review and feedback process is the difference between delegation that feels like it's more trouble than it's worth and effective delegation that opens up your time and up-levels your team.
Why this matters:
Effective delegation empowers your team, promotes professional development, and allows you to focus on higher-level strategic tasks. It also builds trust and improves team efficiency.
