Issue 54: An MLK Day Reflection - Finding Focus When The World Feels Heavy

You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.

- Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

Welcome to this special MLK Jr. Day issue of Skip-Level Strategies,

We're still in fire recovery mode here in the Los Angeles area and I was speaking with a leader last week who said, “I just don’t know how to focus when it feels like everything’s spinning out of control.”

I’ve heard this a lot lately. After the fires, a new administration coming in, and all the uncertainty it brings, many people feel stuck - overwhelmed by circumstances they can’t change.

What I reminded them of (and what I want to remind you) is this:

When the big picture feels overwhelming, the answer is to focus on what's within your reach.

Focus on what you can control, not everything you wish you could.

It’s easy to feel consumed by what’s happening at the national or global level. But the truth is, our power to create change often begins right where we are at this moment - through small, intentional steps that keep you connected to what truly matters.

When you focus on what you can do today, not what you can’t fix overnight, something incredible happens: clarity, and maybe even a little hope, begins to replace chaos.

Here’s a super simple approach to find clarity and reconnect with what matters most:

  1. Breathe. Sit down somewhere quiet. Close your eyes. Take three deep breaths, each one slower than the last. Feel your shoulders relax away from your ears, and let your mind settle. (I find this helpful throughout the day to when I need to refocus.)

  2. Ask. “What is one thing I can do today that reflects what I believe in and makes a difference - no matter how small?”
Maybe it’s checking in with someone who’s struggling. Maybe it’s giving yourself permission to have a real day off. Maybe it's donating a bag of clothes to someone who could use it. Whatever comes to mind first, trust it and go with it.

  3. Act. Commit to that one thing. Write it down, say it out loud, or put it on your calendar or your fridge. Whatever you need to do. Then do it. Don't overthink it or overplan it or wait for the “right” moment.

The power of this exercise isn’t just in what you end up doing - it’s in how it literally anchors you to the things that matter most, especially when everything else feels uncertain and out of control.

Dr. King didn’t wait for perfect conditions to take action. He focused on what could be done with courage, intention, and purpose, even when the path forward was unclear.

You can do the same. WE can do the same

By focusing on what’s within your reach today - this MLK weekend - whether it’s supporting someone else, practicing kindness, or taking care of yourself - you create momentum. And that momentum brings us hope.

If this week's issue speaks to you, I’d love to hear what action you’re committing to right now. Hit reply and let me know. Let’s celebrate finding that first step together.

This MLK Day, go out there and lead,

Asia
