I'm writing this newsletter in the car as we're headed up to Stanford for the water polo Junior Olympics! This is our first time in the JOs and we don't know what to expect but we're going to flow with whatever comes!
The timing couldn't be more perfect to focus on enhancing creativity and innovation. Creative thinking and innovative problem-solving can drive your career and your team (and your water polo game!) to new heights. It can help you find new, unconventional solutions to old problems, and keep work fun.
If you and your team don't have permission to fail you don't have permission to innovate.
Embrace that failure is part of innovation and try on these three simple strategies to foster creativity:
▪️ Strategy 1: Brainstorming Sessions
Hold regular brainstorming sessions where team members can share new ideas without fear of criticism. Consider techniques that involve silent brainstorming where everyone shares an idea or thought on a post it note, for example. This sparks creative thinking plus you avoid listening only to the loudest members on your team. Make these sessions a safe space for free-flowing ideas.
▪️ Strategy 2: Encourage Diverse Perspectives
Promote diversity of thought by including team members from different backgrounds and disciplines in problem-solving discussions. Look around and notice who's missing from the table? Encourage everyone to share their unique perspectives and solutions to challenges.
▪️ Strategy 3: Create a Culture of Experimentation
Encourage your team to experiment with new ideas and approaches. Allow room for trial and error by celebrating lessons learned from the failures. How about “piloting” new ideas with small-scale trials before full implementation. Even if it doesn't work, you're building your teams capacity to experiment together.
Why this matters:
Creativity and innovation are key drivers of progress, competitive advantage, engagement, and even fun! By fostering a culture that values creative thinking and experimentation, you encourage your team to develop new solutions and to #alwaysbelearning.
